Experimental storytelling from Japan’s Chelfitsch Theatre Company.
On the eve of the American and British offensive in Iraq in March 2003, Japan rejoined the ranks of the armed nations for the first time since 1945. A couple of urban hipsters meet and stay for five days in a love hotel obsessing over their affair, while outside in the real world, war changes everything.
Directed by Toshiki Okada, the award winning play Five Days in March skillfully juxtaposes the grand scale event of war with the almost insignificant patterns in daily life. The story is told through a group of actors as they slip in and out of character to narrate and play out each scene. Every move the actors make must not be missed in this turbulent work that explores the ‘present expression’ of Japanese youth. Five Days in March is an exciting experimentation of storytelling from the most talked about contemporary theatre company in Japan.
